The concerto, as a form, assumes a center.

A soloist, a heroic journey, a single individual whose skill and will expand to fill the entire hall. The audience surrenders their ears to time - stillness as the price of admission, stillness as the very condition of listening. It is an ancient contract, one that has seldom been questioned.

People Concerto breaks it.

The stage of Weiwuying's Playhouse is transformed into a colossal instrument. The installation on the floor is the score; you perform it by walking. A sensor system captures every movement and pause in real time, triggering voices recorded by Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart; meanwhile, musicians from Ictus Ensemble and Sheng performer Li-Chin Li respond from within the void. A deity - performed by LIU I-Ling - watches over the earth, observing the coming and going of people with equanimity, quietly steering the world's turning.

Everyone is simultaneously soloist, ensemble, and a fragment of the collective sound. In this work, the composer seems to have vanished. Beyond being a performer, are you - is the collective "you" - also the creator?

Created and developed by New York based composer CHANG Shiuan and interior designer Ma Yuanyuan, with real-time sensor technology by Quanta Research Institute and multi-channel spatial audio by SUN Shao-Ting, People Concerto premieres in April 2026 at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts - Weiwuying.
